Simple Answers to Boost Bottling Line Efficiency
April 2005 Many bottling and packaging lines are pieced together by purchasing individual machines, such as a depalletiser, rinser, filler, corker/screwcapper, capsuler, labeller, packer, palletiser, which are then linked via a conveyor.
During the capital purchase decision-making process, focus tends to be on the expensive machines, while line design, including conveyor accumulation, is often a secondary consideration. It is this purchasing philosophy that leads to bottling line inefficiencies, subsequently resulting in a lower number of wine cases packed pershift and therefore reducing overall business profitability.
Marco Guglielmucci, general manager of JB Macmahon, said he was constantly amazed to watch millions of dollars being spent on specific machinery only to connect it together without due consideration. “How many times have you seen a filler rated at 10,000 bottles per hour operating in a bottling line that only bottles and packages 50,000 bottles in an eight hour shift,” he said. But it’s not all bad news. Marco says most of these inefficiencies can be eliminated by careful line analysis which determines where the throughput constraint exists on the line. “This involves some simple mathematics which takes into consideration the maximum speed of individual machines, how often they break down and the mean time between breakdowns,” he said.
“Once the constraint has been identified it is simply a matter of inserting conveyor accumulation prior to the constraint and the end result is likely to be output gains in the order of 10% to 30%.” In the case mentioned above, that means increasing output from 50,000 bottles per shift to as many as 65,000 bottles per shift.
